Review: A Very Accidental Love Story by Claudia Caroll

A Very Accidental Love Story is the tale of how an unconventional mother’s attempts to do the best for her child change their life forever.

Eloise Elliot is a tough newspaper editor who has to have everything done her way. As the youngest editor in the country she has fought her way to the top. It hasn’t won her any friends but she is in complete control of her life and she wants to keep it that way.

But as she sits alone on her thirtieth birthday, after an awkward drink with her colleagues, she realises that there’s something missing from her life. It’s no surprise that when she decides to have a baby she plans it right down to the donor.

So when three years later her daughter, Lily, is asking about her father, she is a little apprehensive as it didn’t fit into her plans. But she chose the perfect donor so all she needs to do is track him down. Wrong, a search for Lily’s father turns into something else altogether.

In the beginning Eloise is the type of character you may find it hard to warm to. But you do have to admire her smart, tough, determined nature. It is refreshing to read about a strong, independent woman who is taking control of her life.

As she begins to search for the father of her child, we uncover another side to her. There are so many twists and turns in this plot that just as you think the happy ending is coming, there is one more explosion that sets to ruin it all.

Claudia Caroll, the author, completely challenges our idea of the ‘perfect man’ in this book. He isn’t the most successful, from the best background, or even the smartest.  In Eloise’s world success is measured on how important and powerful you are. But as soon as Jake, Lily’s father, enters her life this all changes. He is a curious, funny, charming character who you can’t help but fall in love with too.

This isn’t a quick paced book about being crazy in love. It is a story about security, family and relationships developing over time, if only you open yourself up to them. This is a new kind of love story. If you’re sick of reading the ‘unlucky in love’ or ‘search for a soul mate’ stories, this is the book for you. It gives meaning to the phrase, ‘you find love in the most unlikely place.’
